EXPERIENCE

On this page you can learn more about my past experiences that have led me to my passion of working with victims of sexual assault and human trafficking. I have always known I wanted to help people, as I have gone on mission trips my entire life. These particular experiences changed my life and paved the way to my professional goal of becoming a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. Use the arrows to the right or left below to learn more about each of my experiences.

HAITI MISSION TRIPS

Summer 2015-2018

I went on my first mission trip to Haiti in 2015 and I fell in love with the people. I continued to go back every summer. I went back to the same village of Neply and was able to create relationships with the people there. The woman in the photo with me is the woman who inspired me to fight sex trafficking. She was my age and had been brought to Haiti as a sex slave. She is now free from her captor and is living a happy and healthy life. Hearing her story and becoming friends with her sparked a fire inside me to save other girls just like her. Hearing her journey to happiness helped me when I would speak to victims in the hospital when they would receive a rape kit. I have attached a reflection paper I wrote about the emotional processing theory. Learning about this theory prepared me to be successful when speaking to victims because I understand how trauma can affect a person and that nothing in their healing process should be forced. It is important to meet the victim where they are and allow them to heal in the way that is best for them.
